Fairly new to cultivation, this species impatiens is native to Tibet. It features clear blue flowers on a relatively compact plant. Our third attempt at starting from seed has finally produced sproutlings! They started blooming under lights inside, but I have now planted them in a part shady area of our yard. The blue flowers are marvellous as expected, but I'm equally charmed by the glossy-crinkly dark green leaves (they turned a lighter shade a few weeks later). I hope this one self-seeds!

I. namchabarwensis will certainly self sow for you, probably to excess, as it has for me for the 2 years I have had it. It is not root hardy, it will die completely in fallafter frost. It has nice flowers and is a reliable bloomer, starting at an early age.
More info on it in my blog: http://geraniosgarden.blogspot.com Thanks Ernie - I look forward to a self-sowing stand of this one. This search link shows both of Ernie's posts about the plant. |
- Seed from '05 trade. Baggy 70F (no G, 5w)
- Seed from HPS/MAG '07/'08 exchange. Baggy 70F (4w) - 75F (6w). No G.
- Seed from '08 trade. Baggy 70F (14d; 28%G, 5d)
Looks to me like viable seed germinates readily - but seed doesn't maintain viability very long.
