Earliest of the rhizomatous irises to bloom in our garden. Makes a lovely clump of mid-green foliage with lots of flowers in spring; the rest of the year it's serviceable enough, looking green and healthy - more so than our tall bearded varieties. Our clump has been with us for many years - one of our dependable performers.
For some reason I used to believe this was some kind of Japanese iris (the nursery tag just said "purple"), but GardenWeb members have informed me it's an intermediate bearded hybrid, perhaps with some aril breeding.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston. About my plant portraits
