Iris xiphium

Iris xiphium
Common name Dutch iris
Family iridaceae
Life cycle perennial bulb
Flowers various colors (mid-spring)
Size 18"
Light sun
Cultural notes ordinary garden soil

Amy bought a bag of Dutch iris bulbs one fall, and we forgot about it until it was late November. We didn't feel like spending much time on them at that time, so I just stuck them in holes dug in various garden areas and promptly forgot all about them. The following spring, we couldn't figure out what all these bulb plants were coming up (nearly pulled them. for fear they were a weed onion), and were delighted when they flowered, in colors you'd expect to find in at Babies-R-Us.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston.
