From its base in a corner of our front perennial border, this lanky fella has done just what was expected of him: grow, grow, grow! Ten years after he was planted as a youngster, he stuck out above the gutter of our two-story house; at that point, I didn't even attempt applying Christmas lights any more. The last few years of its life, the tree went through a slow but steady decline; eventually so much of it was dead that we had to cut it down (which resulted in the wonderful smell of cedarwood - but was otherwise a sad occasion). The decline may have been caused by boring or sap-sucking insects. In any case, that was the end of the skyrocket's reign over our front border.
