Prairie wildflower, attractive to butterflies - not the most refined of garden plants, but worth it for its narrowly upright habit and pretty buds just before they open, as well as the flowers, which aren't clustered at tightly on the flower stalk as they are on the more common Liatris spicata, but instead have a bit of a groomed-poodle look. Blooms later than L. spicata, on a much taller plant. I liked the look of the budding plant before the flowers opened as much as the plant in full bloom. Plants may be prone to flopping in a late-summer storm - a little staking may be helpful. That's hypothetical, of course - I'm too lazy to stake anything, so flopped-over plants are a common appearance in our garden.
