Tree (often multi-trunked or shrub-like) native to the southeastern and mid-Atlantic United States. Its creamy white, cup-shaped, fragrant flowers are smaller than those of many other magnolias (2-3" diameter); they appear in mid-spring and sporadically through summer; they evolve into fruits with bright red seeds in autumn. Elongated leaves are shiny green on top with silvery undersides, evergreen in the warmer parts of its range.
