This perennial from eastern Asia wasn't quite hardy in our Pennsylvania garden, so I tried to grow it as an annual – but never saw flowers. It is also used as a vegetable in China, but we never tried it in our salads. After moving to Houston, I started another batch of seed, and set the plants out in two parts of our garden. They weren't happy in either place, wilting in the summer heat, and never flowered – but one patch, which was shaded out by taller neighboring plants, survived, and produced flowers in early March of the following year.

Where they came from is a mystery, I live in the middle of nowhere - they can only be seeded from birds or windblown. They are beautiful, I hope they continue. |
