This is a good "what is THAT?" kind of plant. It stays low and has interestingly angular foliage. In May, the flowerheads form, and are intriguing even when they are still green - then they brighten up the front border when they open to clear blue many-fingered spheres. By summer, it fades back into the green zone. For us, it's been fussless, a reliable performer.

| | Interestingly, the new leaves that appear after flowering is over are completely different from the strappy early foliage, and quite attractive. A good case for a hard shear-back. |

However, my AHS plant encyclopedia rates the related species P. scheuchzeri hardy to only Z5-7. |
