A weed of lawns and gardens, but more troublesome in the lawn. It wouldn't be much trouble in the garden if it weren't for the fact that, as a beginning gardener, I was intrigued by this patch of nice-looking seedlings, and allowed them to go to seed before I realized what I was coddling. Ever since, that particular part of the garden has been infested. But mostly, it sends its flowerstalks up above lawn level, making it look decidedly messy. As you can see in the photo, our lawn supports a broad diversity of plant life - but narrowleaf plantain is prominent among them.

Send me yours, willya? :) |
steve | May 01, 2012 | Nice job on weeds. I use chemicals. 4"-6" deep leaf mulch in planters stunts most weed seedling. 2-4D is decomposed to basic, non-toxic elements by soil micro-organisms. If your garden soil is well amended with compost, you have a high micro-organism count. It will never get in the H20 table.
Learn the kill symptoms for any weed specy you spray. This way you'll minimise chemical usage. The chemical isn't the problem. The problem is the applicator.
Main thing-don't let weeds go to seed, pull weeds as soon as they flower.
Have a weed control program established befor you plant, or you'll have a mess long term. |
