 |
| Common name |
longleaf lungwort |
| Family |
boraginaceae |
| Life cycle |
perennial (Z3-8) |
| Flowers |
blue (mid-spring) |
| Size |
6" |
| Light |
part shade |
| Cultural notes |
ordinary garden soil (not too dry) |
As the name suggests, the leaves on this lungwort are narrower than the common lungwort (P. officinalis), but they are similarly white-mottled. Ours blooms from late April to early May - small blue and pink flowers held close to the foliage.

|
| | What's best about this pulmonaria, though, is the way its foliage holds up through summer. The photo here was taken in late July, by which time the common lungwort was a mildewy mess. |
|
| | Another asset is its early return in spring - this photo was taken in the first days of April |

I cann't believe how a small plant (4"containers) grew into a 12-18" plant in one year. I do have a question - how does this plant spread? I have notice small plant growing within about 20' for the mother plants. If you
know let me know. I've also noticed a single seedling near my original plant. It doesn't seed as rampantly as the regular lungwort, but I'm pretty sure its main reproduction is by seed. |
| cheryl | Sep 29, 2009 | Hi, planning a garden for a client for next spring, i love this plant. Can it grow in full shade? Or does it
need some sun?
Thank you for any info. According to several sources I checked, it will grow in full shade. I expect that blooming will be somewhat diminished in those conditions. Ours gets morning sun, which seems to suit it just fine. |
