US native with pinnately divided leaves. According to most sources, its coneflowers have yellow petals with a narrow gray cone - but the plants I grew developed much more dramatic burgundy/yellow bicolor flowers. The species of ratibida appear to be confused in the (internet) trade, because I've seen identical-looking plants labeled as R. pinnata, R. columnifera, and R. columnaris. Regardless of which one this is, I'm glad to have it. So are the hoverflies!
Plants bloom throughout the summer - in 2007, ours started in mid-June, and were still in full bloom in late September. Not so sure about their perennial status, though - most plants were dead as a doornail after their first winter, with only a single one showing some signs of life.
