Rhododendron x azalea Gable hybrid 'Stewartsonian'
|In mid-autumn, the foliage takes on a patchwork of brilliant colors, tending toward the burgundy |
The only azalea in our garden. We bought one, and promptly lost it in a bad drought. We bought another one, put it in the same spot, and a few years later, another drought nearly did it in - but somehow it scratched itself back from near-death, and now is once again in beautiful bloom. We're glad we didn't just dig it up when it seemed dry and lifeless...

This plant used to grow in our garden, but it slipped away...

When I moved to this house, there was a long line of Stewartsonians that were horribly sculpted into tall gumballs. I cut them back hard to about 18 inches tall, and they grew back within two seasons to good-sized, blooming plants. A nearly-all-dead plant in a west facing garden responded similarly well, and is now about 4 feet tall.|
|Teresa||May 09, 2011||I live in Windsor, Ontario, (Zone 5)I love this rhododendron, but have been told it will not tolerate a high windy location (west facing location, I've also been told it will be fine. They are $64.00 each and I need 3; therefore, want any advice before I buy that many.|
Yeah, that's a sizable investment. Unfortunately, I can't give you an informed answer: ours is in a fairly sheltered location between larger shrubs.
