| Susan Johnston | May 26, 2006 | Yes, this is a host plant for not only the black swallowtail caterpillar, but the giant swallowtail caterpillar. The giant swallowtail caterpillars look like bird droppings, at odds with the colorful striped black swallowtail caterpillars. If you disturb them by touching their heads, they will release their orange or red osmenteria (like small horns) that emit a foul order, which is a defense mechanism they use to warn predators.
