Has graced our side garden's shrub border for some years now, and continues to claim more space. Its purple leaves are attractive throughout the growing season, although the purple gradually makes way for mid green as the summer progresses. The shrub's overall habit is pleasant if you can work with its inclination to throw branches out horizontally. Flowers, while not as showy as those of some flowering shrubs, certainly add to the charm.

| Berries in early August, still undergoing their color change from red to black. |

Visitors to this page have left the following commentsOrna | Apr 17, 2008 | My tree is 3 years old and about 10 ft high. Unfortunately one of its lovely branches was knocked off by a football !!! 2 years ago - have never pruned it before and someone suggested pruning back v hard now. I live in Cork, in v south of Ireland, winds are quite strong, but pleasant temperatures generally although frost still lurking. What do you think about the pruning? Would really appreciate your advice. Many thanks. Orna Kavanagh
Elders don't mind a hard pruning at all. Not sure if there is a best time to prune, but now would be fine. |
A Mather | Jul 17, 2013 | Do these plants start off black and change when mature or always black? Thanx The color changes through the season, but I don't think it changes with maturity of the specimen - although it's hard to remember from year to year exactly how dark the new growth was. |
