 |
Common name |
giant squill |
Family |
hyacinthaceae |
Life cycle |
perennial (Z7-10) |
Flowers |
blue (spring) |
Native to Spain and Portugal, this bulb grows well in Mediterranean climates. The large bulb produces fleshy leaves starting in fall, after its summer dormancy, and dense clusters of hyacinth-like blue flowers in spring. It reportedly skips flowering some years; applying fertilizer after flowering may promote next-year blooms.
