Fresh-green, slightly leathery foliage, with large flowers in shades of blue to purple starting early summer. We originally grew the 'Bluestone' cultivar, which featured powder blue flowers on a smaller plant. Those eventually expired, to be replaced by several plants of 'Purple Parasols', which are at least superficially similar, with flowers in a purplish blue hue.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston. One or more images of this plant are included in my stock photo catalog About my plant portraits

Visitors to this page have left the following commentsconnie magill | Sep 19, 2009 | I have several stokes asters, purchased and planted separately, which have lots of healthy leaves, plenty of buds, but, NO blooms. They get to the blooming stage and just completely dry up. More buds appear and do the same thing. I have what I consider a successful garden except for my stokes asters. I do feed and water on a regular schedule. Please help - I love them. Thanks. I really don't know, Connie. Hopefully somebody else will stop by who does. |
nonnie | May 25, 2010 | Connie, some of my peonies did a similar thing this spring. I think it was too little sun. I'm going to either move them of trim back a crepe myrtle or two. Good luck. |
Allen | Jun 26, 2010 | Can you "root" the Stokes Aster? If so how?
oleduckhuntr42@yahoo.com I haven't tried (yet). I've just in the past two years started experimenting with rooting shrubs and perennials, and hope to add information to my plant pages as I gain experience. |
