Thalictrum occidentale

Thalictrum occidentale
Nice and full by mid-April
western meadow rue
Common name western meadow rue
Family ranunculaceae
Life cycle perennial (Z5)
Flowers pinkish-white (May)
Size to 40"

Species native to western North America, with male and female flowers on separate plants. We got just four seedlings , so hopefully they'll all grow to maturity, and between them represent both sexes.
In their second year now, and so far one is blooming, with nondescript, greenish-white flowers on wispy stalks, rather hard to catch on photo.

The photos above show the progression of the fading flowers on our one plant. It did appear to set seed, but I neglected to collect any so I'll never know if it was viable.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston.

Seed-starting details for this plant

  1. Seed from '05 trade. Baggy 70F (21d) - 35F (42d) - 70F (43%G, 10-16d)
  2. Same seed as above. Baggy 35F (6w) - 70F (22d; no G, moldy)

Differences may be due to exact sequence and timing of warm/cold stages, but more likely are indicative of low viability of the seed after dry storage.
