Tiarella cordifolia

Tiarella cordifolia
Pink Skyrocket

Oakleaf
Tiarella cordifolia
'Brandywine' in dappled shade, late April

Common name foamflower
Family saxifragaceae
Life cycle perennial
Flowers white (spring)
Size 6-12"
Light part-full shade
Cultural notes ordinary garden soil (not too dry)

Close relative of heuchera, similar also in that many fancy-leaved varieties have been bred. We had one variety for a few years, but it was never very happy, and expired after a few years. 2006 brought two new varieties to our garden, one a cultivar of T. cordifolia ('Oakleaf'), the other a hybrid ('Pink Skyrocket').
In 2008, two years later, the "off" switch triggered on both of the named beauties. I guess they're not meant to be long-lived perennials - I should learn how to propagate them so I can continue to enjoy them... Meanwhile, I purchased two new plants - 'Skeleton Key' (hybrid to 7", white flowers, lobed leaves with black/green patterning), and 'Brandywine' (species, 12-18", white flowers, gently lobed leaves), to keep the species represented in our garden.

After two years in the garden, the Brandywines have spread themselves out a bit, making a nice line along our side garden path

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston.

One or more images of this plant are included in my stock photo catalog
