Purchased a plant just labeled as "Tibouchina sp.", so I'm somewhat guessing at the botanical name – but it seems like a good match with its purple flowers and soft-hairy leaves. Not sure about the growth habit – T. urvilleana is described as vine-like, while our specimen is thus far acting as a conventional upright-growing plant. I set it out in a north-facing border where it gets only morning and late-afternoon sun, with soil that tends to stay moist even during dry spells. I expected it to be frost-tender, so I was surprised to see that it was still looking good after several mild overnight freezes knocked down the top growth of other tender plants in the garden. In fact, it was still blooming nicely on Christmas day, and suffered no damage all winter.
