Annual wildflower, widely distributed through North America. Both flowers and leaves are arranged tightly around whispy upright stems; the species name refers to the arrangement of the leaves clasping around the stem, visible in the photo here. I attempted to grow this from seed several years, and a few times got seedlings but no flowering plants. On my third attempt, I must have done something right, because I now have flowers. Not that they contribute much to the garden, being both wildflowerishly sparse and planted in our nursery holding area - but it's good to see them strut what they got anyways.

Not sure if cold is necessary for germination, but it sure didn't hurt.
