An oddity among the Japanese maples we grow, 'Murasaki Kiyohime' grows much wider than it is tall. I didn't know this when I planted it: I bought it for the pretty rose-margined green leaves, and never knew its name until, intrigued by its habit, I enquired about it at the nursery where I bought it (at the same time as 'Shishigashira' which lives just across the bog from it). After several years in the garden, it started to look a little awkward, with a bare center surrounded by branches sticking haphazardly in all directions. But some judicious pruning last year appears to have been successful – the tree is looking rather elegant right now.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston. About my plant portraits

The 'real' 'Kiyohime' has broader leaf lobes, paler red margins and tips on the the new spring growth when leafing out under the same temperature and light conditions, and a flatter top with a more formal dome shape as a mature (+8 years) plant. It also has more brittle branches than 'Murasaki Kiyohime', and grows more slowly under the same conditions. Thanks for letting me know. I no longer have that garden (or, obviously, that tree), but I've updated the name on this page based on your expert knowledge. |
