Common name Tatarian maple
Family aceraceae
Life cycle tree
Flowers creamy white (May)

Medium-sized maple tree with handsomely cut leaves that turn a brilliant shade of crimson in fall. We raised our specimen from seed many years ago; it was slow to get started, but has by now grown into a handsome small tree, making occasional babies below.

In 2008, 4 or 5 years after starting our tree from seed, it blooms for the first time - in the middle of May, quite a bit later than the other maples in our garden. By late May, the seeds are forming - pink-tinged propellors shaped a bit differently from most other maples.

Holds onto its samaras a long time – they're still clinging on by the time the leaves turn in early November

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston.

One or more images of this plant are included in my stock photo catalog
