Seed ripens | late November |
Grown primarily for the clusters of small purple bead-like fruit. Fruiting is best when several plants are clustered together. I started ours from seed years ago; it tested my patience, but flowers and fruits started appearing after a few years. By then I had already taken note of the fall coloration, which features shades of yellow and purple, and is better some years than others. The berries are larger than those of the Japanese beautyberry, so in a good year they make even more of a statement.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston. About my plant portraits

Some particularly helpful links to other websites
- Seed from '02/'03 HPS/MAG exchange. Pot outside late Feb, some germination by early May
- Seed from '06 garden. Soaked several berries overnight, removed pulp. Seeds to baggy 35F (4w) - 70F (80%G, 6-17d)
Noticed that seed husks have a tendency to stay on developing seedlings, sometimes preventing further development. ]
