Duchesnea indica

Duchesnea indica
indian strawberry; mock strawberry
Duchesnea indica

Common name indian strawberry; mock strawberry
Family rosaceae
Life cycle perennial
Flowers yellow (spring)
Size sprawler
Light part shade-sun

Kind of handsome, this weed - slightly glossy, creased leaves in patterns of three on sprawling stems, with yellow flowers held above. A few days after the flowers, the "strawberries" appear, bright shiny red (they have no flavor worth noting). A fast grower as far as I can tell - the first time I noticed it, right in open view of our walkway, it had already attained significant bulk. Until a few years ago, it was not common in our garden, but since then it has really taken off, and will happily cover large areas of cultivated beds as well as snake its way through lawn to colonize fertile fields beyond.

This is a weed in our garden
