Seed ripens | late October |
This was one of the trees in a ten-pack from the Arbor Day Society. I planted it in a nursery area, proceeded to lose track of what it was, and needed the help of GardenWeb ID experts to figure out its identity. Then it got planted out in the back yard, where it apparently didn't settle in quite enough, because the next year, the top growth was dead. But new shoots came up from the soil line, and by the end of the year, the tree was just as tall as it had been. And from then on, it's been completely hardy. After a few years, it started blooming, although not as attractively as I'd hoped, with a somewhat muddy coloration – perhaps that why I've not yet managed to capture its flowers on film just yet. On the other hand, the seedpods are quite nice, and can be spotted from afar (see photo above). The seeds they drop give rise to a good number of volunteers every year. Luckily, they're easy enough to pull up.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston. About my plant portraits
