Responsible for the delightful basil flavor that its leaves lend to many southeast Asian dishes, Thai basil also makes for a nice garden plant. In our Houston garden, it has proven prolific, seeding itself into borders, containers, and even in cracks between our patio flagstones. Where it's welcome, we allow it to grow into its nice rounded bushy self – where it isn't it's easy enough to remove. The flowers come most of the season – the photo here was taken on Christmas eve, well past its prime but still enhancing the garden, before any freezing weather arrived.
