Prunus cerasifera 'Thundercloud'

Prunus cerasifera 'Thundercloud'
purple-leaf plum

Common name purple-leaf plum
Family rosaceae
Life cycle tree (Z4)
Flowers pink (April)
Size 20'

One of the first trees we planted in our back yard, this was a good choice. The pink flowers, appearing right around mid-April every year, are very welcome early in the season, and the purple foliage keeps the interest up through the rest of the year. They have a reputation for attracting Japanese beetles, but in our garden these pests actually prefer (many) other ornamentals.

Prunus cerasifera 'Thundercloud'

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston.

One or more images of this plant are included in my stock photo catalog
