Evergreen shrub or small tree native to dry slopes of the southwestern U.S., where it grows at elevations from 3000 to 8000 feet. It grows slowly, with leathery green leaves decorating twisted branches. Fragrant creamy yellow flowers arrive in spring, and are followed by fruit with showy silvery plumes.
