Salvia subrotunda |
|
South American species, attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds. Our plants started blooming in early June, and continued on throughout summer. Flowers are scarlet, leaves are bright green and heart-shaped. The flowerstalks are free of leaves, which gives these annuals an airy, see-through look. I'm glad we gave this species a try – with a bit of luck, they'll self-seed in our cutting garden.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston. Seed for this plant is included on my seed trade list One or more images of this plant are included in my stock photo catalog About my plant portraits

Somehow one of the lots I collected in 2012 was barely viable, while the other did reasonably well. They were collected a few weeks apart, but both appeared to contain viable-looking seed.
