Teucrium chamaedrys

Teucrium chamaedrys
Common name prostrate and upright germander
Family lamiaceae
Life cycle perennial
Flowers purple (late spring)
Size 8"
Light sun-part shade
Cultural notes ordinary garden soil

We mainly grow the creeping form prostratum, which is a low-growing mat-former with attractive glossy serrated leaves. Supposedly needs moist soil, but we grow it in some places that don't get much irrigation in times of drought, and it's done fine. At prime blooming time the plant is evenly speckled in (though not covered with) flowers. The rest of the season, it's a very useful foliage plant. I'm not sure why it's relatively uncommon. We've also had the upright (common) form a few times; this one is used in low hedges, or as an evergreen accent in herb gardens.

The foliage is evergreen. In this new-year's-day photo, it gleams in the winter sun.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston.
