Zizia aurea

Zizia aurea
golden alexanders

Synonym(s) Smyrnium aureum
Common name golden alexanders
Family apiaceae
Life cycle perennial (Z3-8)
Flowers yellow (May-June)
Size 2'
Light sun-part shade
Cultural notes ordinary garden soil (not too dry)
From seed self-seeds modestly in our garden

Flat-topped clusters of yellow flowers in late spring. They aren't real showy, but work quite nicely in between other plants - such as the cranesbill in the picture above. U.S. native wildflower, serving as a host plant for some butterfly species.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston.

One or more images of this plant are included in my stock photo catalog
