Woodland plant native to the Eastern half of North America. One of them appeared, through a pathway unknown to us, in the middle of our side garden one year. Certainly not a common weed to us. It has its charm, but the high leaf/flower ratio and lack of flower power explains why in garden settings, some of its cousins (such as G. chiloense and G. rivale are of greater value.
